Learning a Second Language Offers First-Rate Benefits

Excerpt from Teri Disimplico , Contributing Writer, Delaware Woman Online , June 2005

Many studies reveal that in every country, native speakers use only about 2,500 distinct words and phrases on a daily basis. It would then, in turn, seem possible to learn a second language quickly. Even though many statistics prove that learning a second language as a child is easier, it is possible to learn a second language as an adult quickly and effectively.

The keys to learning a language is a combination of motivation and first-class, first-language speaker material from which to learn. Studies have shown that the brain is automatically programmed to take words and put them together. Although it differs from language to language, it does not differ as much as you think. In fact, many linguists believe that there are dialects of only one language. So armed with that information, take the challenge of learning a second language and see how satisfying it can be.

Benefits of Learning a Second Language

For starters, individuals who learn a second language benefit in many ways. They are better able to communicate with native speakers in this -- and other -- countries, they have a better understanding of other cultures and they are better prepared in their careers.
